Overview
No doors and no dates. Harney & Sons packs this as a sampler in a classic black archive-style box with the Harney logo, and calls it a hostess gift worth keeping on hand. The house began in 1983 in Salisbury, Connecticut, with John Harney blending tea in his basement. Inside are 18 bags, two each of nine teas.
Organic Black and Organic Earl Grey Supreme cover the black side, and Organic Green, Organic Citron Green and Organic Green with Citrus & Ginkgo the green. Hibiscus, Organic Ginger Turmeric, Organic Peppermint and Organic Rooibos are the herbal cups; the ingredient list gives the last as a rooibos chai with coriander, fennel, cinnamon, cardamom and nutmeg.
The Earl Grey is Fair Trade Certified, with 98% Fair Trade Certified ingredients. The box can be refilled with any Harney tea bags. It costs $19.95 at harney.com.
Taste & variety
Nine teas, two bags each: a first cup and a verdict cup. The black side is Organic Black and Organic Earl Grey Supreme, which carries Fair Trade certification. Three greens follow, Organic Green, Organic Citron Green with orange oil, and Organic Green with Citrus & Ginkgo.
Then the part with no tea leaf in it. Hibiscus, Organic Peppermint, Organic Ginger Turmeric (ginger, apple, hibiscus, lemongrass, turmeric, cardamom, nutmeg) and an Organic Rooibos that Harney's ingredient list shows to be a chai, with coriander, fennel, cinnamon, cardamom and nutmeg.
Four of nine are herbal, which makes this a gentler box than most black-tea samplers.
Packaging & gift appeal
A classic black archive-style box with the Harney & Sons logo and gold accents, sturdy enough, according to Harney, to be refilled with any of its tea bags. That sentence changes the gift.
After the eighteen bags are gone the box is still a good-looking thing on a shelf, and it takes whatever the recipient decides to buy next. Black with gold accents, no snow and no reindeer, it is a design that does not date itself to a season, so it can live in a kitchen in March without embarrassment.
What is in the box
Eighteen certified organic tea bags, two each of Hibiscus, Organic Black, Organic Citron Green, Organic Earl Grey Supreme, Organic Ginger Turmeric, Organic Green, Organic Green with Citrus & Ginkgo, Organic Peppermint and Organic Rooibos (the ingredient list calls it Organic Rooibos Chai), in a refillable black archive-style box.
Key features
- Eighteen certified organic tea bags, two of each of nine teas
- Black, green, herbal and rooibos in one box
- Four of the nine are herbal, with no tea leaf
- A sturdy black box that can be refilled with any Harney tea bags
Our verdict
Nine organic teas, two bags of each, in a plain black box that takes refills. It is not a seasonal showpiece, and that is its virtue: a sensible present for a host, a colleague or a stocking, and one that suits a mix of coffee and tea drinkers.
What we like
- Nine different teas, with herbal ones among them
- Certified organic across the whole box
- A sturdy black box that stays on the shelf and takes refills
- Bags need no infuser, so it suits a first-time gift
A few things to know
- Two bags of each tea is a taste, not a supply
- Black tea gets only four of the 18 bags
- At 18 bags it does not stretch to a full December

What buyers say
Buyers like the variety and the packaging and mostly bought the box as a gift. Two reviewers add caveats: it is smaller than one expected, and another would have liked some herbal blends, since the box is all black teas.
Very nice packaging. I would buy again.
it's smaller than I thought but very nice
would have appreciated some herbal blends
