Overview
Whittard of Chelsea began in 1886, when Walter Whittard, who had worked for a tea trader, opened a shop on Fleet Street and sold tea to the nearby law courts as 'The Barrister's Refresher'. The firm moved to Chelsea after its premises were bombed in the war. The 2026 calendar keeps to that tea-merchant mood: black tea only, in bags, 48 of them behind twenty-four doors, sixteen blends.
The classics are all there, Ceylon, Darjeeling, English Breakfast, Chelsea Breakfast, Festive Breakfast, Irish Tea, Tippy Assam and Kenya, with Afternoon Tea, Christmas Tea, Earl Grey, English Rose and Piccadilly on the flavoured side, and Masala, Vanilla and Coconut Chai for something warmer.
The box is red and gold with ornaments and stars, each bag is individually wrapped, and the whole thing is suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Product of the UK.
Taste & variety
Sixteen blends are listed for the 48 bags. The plain end is Ceylon, Darjeeling, Kenya, Tippy Assam, English Breakfast, Chelsea Breakfast, Festive Breakfast and Irish Tea. The middle is Afternoon Tea, Christmas Tea, Earl Grey, English Rose and Piccadilly.
Masala Chai, Vanilla Chai and Coconut Chai close the list. There is no green, no white and nothing herbal, which is the entire point and also the limit, though a few blends add hibiscus or lemongrass.
If someone in the house asks for rooibos in the evening, this calendar offers them nothing, and Bird & Blend will serve better.
Packaging & gift appeal
A red and gold box with ornaments and stars on a navy and red ground, 24 numbered doors, and each bag wrapped on its own so it keeps fresh. Whittard sells the contents as a 96 g net weight, and the box is the usual festive cardboard, handsome without being precious.
It will not become a keepsake, and it is not meant to. Beside Mariage Frères' ribbon-tied orange case it looks like the sensible cousin, which suits its price and its habit of being opened in a hurry on the way out of the door.

Our verdict
A calendar for people who drink black tea all year, from a house that has sold it since 1886. The sixteen blends cover Ceylon to Coconut Chai without a single herbal to dilute the idea.
Wrong for anyone who wants variety of tea types, right for someone who simply wants a better cup at four o'clock.
What we like
- Sixteen black tea blends, classics and Christmas
- Individually wrapped bags
- Vegetarian and vegan
- Three chai blends
A few things to know
- Black tea only
- Some blends repeat across the 24 doors
