Tea’s enemies are boring and everywhere
Light, heat, moisture, and strong smells. That is the whole list. Your sunny windowsill looks festive and slowly ruins the leaf. The shelf above the kettle looks convenient and cooks the aromatics.
Best home for a calendar: a cool cupboard, away from spices and coffee, closed between openings. Not romantic. Effective.
If the box is too pretty to hide, park it somewhere dim between uses. Pride of place all day only helps the photos.
Storage checklist
- Keep the box closed when you are not opening a door.
- Avoid direct sun, radiators, and oven heat.
- Do not store next to open spices, coffee, or cleaning products.
- If a door tears badly, bag that day’s tea separately.
- Loose leaf leftovers: airtight tin, label the blend, drink within a few months.
- Skip the fridge and freezer for normal calendars.
- Wipe wet counter tops before the cardboard sits in a puddle. Sounds obvious. Still happens.
Format notes
Individually wrapped bags (Twinings, Ahmad, many Nordqvist-style sets) are the most forgiving. Mesh temples are still fine if the outer box stays dry. Open drawer loose-leaf systems need more care once seals are broken.
Luxury tin calendars often store best of all after Christmas, because the tins themselves become the storage. That is part of what you paid for.
If a door rips and leaves leaf exposed, do not “save it for later” in the broken cavity. Move it. Future-you does not want a dusty Assam souvenir.
After 24 December
Sort keepers and traders. Label anything you loved so you can buy a full tin in January. Gift doubles to a tea-drinking neighbor instead of letting them go stale in a drawer.
Flatten or recycle the outer board if it is not a keepsake. Keeping empty cardboard for the aesthetic is optional. Keeping good leaf is not.

Frequently asked questions
Should I refrigerate a tea advent calendar?
No. Fridge humidity and food smells are worse than a cool cupboard. Keep it dry, dark, and away from the hob and dishwasher steam.
What about open doors and leftover tea?
Reseal what you can. Move open loose leaf into a tin or jar. Individually wrapped bags are more forgiving than open drawers.
How long do leftover advent teas stay good?
Wrapped bags often taste fine for months if kept dry and dark. Loose leaf is happier within a few months of opening. Smell it. Flat aroma usually means flat cup.
Can I store the box on display?
Yes if the room is cool and not sunny. A bright windowsill looks festive and slowly dulls the tea. Display for guests, store for quality.
